Firestop Caulk Sealant Abesco

Firestop Caulks can also be called Firestop Sealants, or Firestop Mastic, it just depends on what part of the world you are in.

Our UK office www.abesco.net uses the term firestop mastic.  We use caulks and sometimes sealants in the United States.  It’s all the same, just different terms.

Why firestop?  We use fire protection in fire rated construction to help prevent the spread of three major components.

  • Fire
  • Smoke
  • Toxic Gases

A firestop is a fire protection system made of various components used to seal openings and joints in fire rated wall or floor assemblies based on tested systems.  Items alone are not fire rated, products assembled properly according to a tested systems are.

Research early for the tested UL systems when looking for firestop caulks or sealants!

Firestops are designed to restore the fire-resistance ratings of wall and/or floor assemblies by impeding the spread of fire by filling the openings with fire-resistant materials. Unprotected openings in fire separations cancel out the fire-resistance ratings of the fire separations, allowing the spread of fire, usually past the limits of the fire safety plan of a building.

Firestopping is required by building codes and is part of a larger comprehensive firestop risk management program!

Abesco CP310 FR Acrylic Intumescent Caulk is designed to prevent the spread of fire from one compartment to another wherever services penetrate separating walls and floors, or wherever a gap remains between elements in fire rated walls or floors.

Abesco CP310 FR Acrylic Intumescent Caulk is a single part water based acrylic caulk, which provides a firm but flexible seal to voids in a variety of fire rated structures. It will not support combustion, and when exposed to fire it forms a carbonaceous char which expands to effectively seal any gaps, and prevents the spread of smoke and fire.

Abesco CP310 FR Acrylic Intumescent Caulk is supplied in a range of packaging sizes.

Our Firestop Caulk is available in both Red and White.

Here are some good design principles to think about when looking for firestop materials.

•All openings should be provided with a fire-stop that maintains the required integrity (fire rating) and/or insulation (t) of the fire wall or floor
• Insulation (temperature ratings) should be provided when combustible materials are located close to the wall of floor surface
• Fire-stops should be suitable for their intended use (fire & non-fire situations)
• Fire-stops should not affect the normal operation of building services/joint design
• Selected fire-stops should be tested or assessed to the relevant fire safety or building code

Firestop Caulks / Sealants:

  1. Prevent the passage of fire
  2. —Provide an effective smoke and toxic gas barrier
  3. —Water resistance seal
  4. Give excellent acoustical performance
  5. —Retards transmission of heat
  6. —Lower insurance costs
  7. —Give peace of mind
